Under water challenge for charity
Friday 3 December 2010
Solent University’s Sub-Aqua Club recently took part in a 24-hour diveathon to raise money for the Hamble Independent Lifeboat last week.
Eight teams of three took it in turns to settle on the bottom of the pool at Andark Dive and Water Sports Centre in Swanwick and raised almost £2,000.
To pass the time while underwater, some caught up on sleep while others tested their Frisbee and skittles skills.
Solent alumnus James Baker – who set up events company Freedom Adventure with fellow alumni Tim Miller following graduation - took part in the challenge and was delighted with the result:
“It was great to be a part of the diveathon and raise money for such a good cause. I spent most of my time cleaning the bottom of the tank and sleeping, although playing chess seemed to prove popular for passing time for those taking part!”
The club’s student Chair Izzy Smith said: “The best bit was the end when we all came to cheer the last pair and met the Hamble Lifeboat Crew. That made it all worthwhile, even at the cost of the bags under my eyes!”
The Sub-Aqua Club is dedicated to students, staff and alumni of Solent University and has an enviable record of training its members in the sport.
