Simon May made a Visiting Professor at Solent University

  Simon May – composer of the iconic Eastenders’ theme tune - was made a Visiting Professor at Southampton Solent University, following a workshop with students on the music courses.

May - who is also the composer of TV theme-tunes BBC’s Howard Way, Castaway and Brat Camp - gave an interactive master class about the secrets of good melody and song-writing to a packed lecture theatre.

He answered questions regarding music arrangement, creativity and the motivation behind his work, before receiving his Professorship.

Popular Music and Record Production Course Leader Paul Rutter, who presented him with the award,said:

“It was great to see such a warm and interactive response from the students. We are really looking forward to his workshops in the New Year!"

Simon May said: “Solent has amazing facilities, truly dedicated staff and passionate students.  Three factors that make it a fantastic university to work with.  

“I was impressed by the intelligent questions being asked about the industry and the writing process. It was a great warm-up for things to come.”

May has received numerous awards and nominations for his music, including an Ivor Novello for Nick Berry’s UK Number One 'Every Loser Wins' and three TRIC Awards for Best TV Theme for  EastEnders, Howard's Way and Trainer.

Amongst his top tips, Simon stressed the importance of networking in the industry with purpose and honesty. As a visiting professor, he will be returning in the New Year to perform a more in-depth music workshop with Solent students.
