Theo Paphitis receives honorary degree

4 November 2010

Southampton Solent University has awarded an honorary degree to a man renowned for his shrewd business decisions and charismatic personality.

Theo Paphitis received the honorary degree of Doctor of Business during a ceremony at Southampton’s Guildhall on Thursday 4 November.

Best known by the nation for his captivating appearances on BBC Two’s Dragons’ Den, Theo has a business empire spanning retail, property, finance and consumer goods. He uses his considerable experience to advise young entrepreneurs on the programme – and has invested in several innovative businesses and brands.

In 2005 he acquired Red Letter Days, the UK’s leading gift experience company, in partnership with fellow Dragon Peter Jones.

The fortunes of La Senza Lingerie (UK), Contessa Lingerie, Ryman, Partners the Stationers and Stationery Box have all been revived by Theo’s considerable expertise. He sold his interest in La Senza and Contessa in 2006 and in 2008 combined the stationery businesses to launch a new chain, Ryman Stationery, where he is Chairman.

En route to the graduation event Theo launched his new lingerie brand, Boux Avenue||, via twitter.

Charities – many of which are associated with children - benefit tremendously from Theo’s high profile. The Paphitis Charitable Trust distributes fees from TV appearances, speeches and his book to causes close to his heart.

Theo is also an ambassador for the Red Nose Day and Sport Relief Campaigns. He has raised considerable funds for Comic Relief with the assistance of the Ryman employees.   Together with his fellow ‘dragons’ Theo also supports Children in Need.

More than 2,000 students are graduating with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at Southampton Guildhall from 1-5 November.
