Tuesday 9 February 2011

Lawrie McMenemySolent University is playing a part in Southampton Football Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations. And you can be a part of it!

Come along to Southampton’s Guildhall Square this Sunday afternoon and enjoy the range of activities on offer. These include: Human Table Football tournament (including a team of ex-Saints), a display by the university’s cheerleading team, a soccer skills session for the under 10s and screening of the Saints’ greatest matches in the nearby Sir James Matthews Building.

In addition, Solent Health Spark will be offering health and fitness advice, along with free health screening checks, including blood pressure and lung capacity.

The occasion will culminate with the unveiling by Saints 1976 FA Cup winning manager Lawrie McMenemy of a unique sculpture specially commissioned by the university as a lasting tribute to the team's glorious history and a gift to the city of Southampton.

This unique public work of art named 'Saints for all Seasons' has been crafted out of sheet steel and takes the form of a typical Saints team as they might line up for a photograph. The players represented are wearing a selection of the strips worn by the club over its 125 year history.

The timetable for the day is as follows:

  • 15.30     Human table football competition (sponsored by city law firm Moore Blatch)
  • 17.00     Vice Chancellor, Professor Van Gore presentation of sculpture to the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Carol Cunio
  • Acceptance of sculpture on behalf of the City by the Mayor, Cllr Carol Cunio
  • Unveiling of sculpture (sponsored by Barratt Homes) by Lawrie McMenemy and former Southampton players.
