 Female Drag Queen HolestarSouthampton Solent University is celebrating International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO)  (Tuesday 17 May) with ‘Absolution’ - a showcase of acts from London’s avant-garde performance scene.

IDAHO Day was launched in August 2004 to raise awareness of homophobic issues that negatively impact on people’s lives, and to highlight areas where a positive change has been achieved. 

The event – organised as part of the University’s Equality Scheme – will feature some of London’s most cutting edge performers. Scottee, Ryan Styles and

Holestar will take to the stage at The London Hotel, Oxford Street, Southampton for an evening of alternative entertainment.

Scottee - described by Timeout as 'London's most experimental rising talent'. The London-based performance artist has showcased some of the world’s most prestigious galleries & theatres including: Tate Britain & Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Opera House and Roundhouse.

Holestar, a female drag queen - with a strong penchant for extravagant makeup, comedic, autobiographical and political song dance routines – will be performing her act ‘Experiments in Experimentation’. Ryan Styles will take to the stage with ‘Suicide Blonde’ - a unique combination of mime, drag and live art. The night will finish with a DJ set from Holestar.

Andrew Markham, event Curator and Senior Lecturer in Fashion Styling at Southampton Solent University says: “This event seeks to challenge - through art and performance - people’s stereotypes and preconceptions of difference. The aim of ‘Absolution’ is to add more than a little politic to the mix.”

The event will also raise funds for ‘Breakout Youth’ - a Southampton support project for young people aged 13 to 21 who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender or unsure of their gender or sexual identity.

The evening’s entertainment begins at The London Hotel at 7:30pm with acts performing from 8:45pm. There is a suggested minimum door donation of £3.00. For further information about ‘Absolution’ contact events@solent.ac.uk||
