recognising racism dayIn recognition of International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Monday 21 March, Southampton Solent University is hosting a six-a-side football tournament for local primary and junior schools.

The charity-based, non-profit tournament will highlight the issues of racism within sport and society. It aims to raise awareness of the consequences surrounding racism and how it can have a negative impact on others.

Schools in the Southampton and Eastleigh area will be taking part in the inaugural tournament – which forms part of the University’s Equality Scheme – being held at the University’s Hardmoor Sports Ground.

Show Racism the Red Card - a charity that works to educate young people about race discrimination through the medium of sport - will be running fun activities in between games to get across the message that racism is not acceptable. Paul Mortimer - former England Under 21, Charlton and Aston Villa midfielder – will be running workshops for the children during the day, tackling the issues surrounding racism.

Phil Green, Director of Sport Solent and Southampton Solent University Equality Forum member said: “Solent University is delighted to support Show Racism the Red Card. Sport is a powerful platform to tackle some of the inequalities in our society, and we are delighted to provide this opportunity for local schoolchildren to take part in healthy competition while learning about social justice.”
