Solent gets greener

Southampton Solent University has boosted its green credentials, climbing more than 30 places in the Guardian newspaper’s 2011 People and Planet Green League Tables.

The Guardian’s green table ranks institutions according to 13 criteria designed to assess their policy and senior-level commitment to environmental management, as well as indicators of performance against policy commitments.

Each university is judged against criteria and awarded an allocated amount of points (similar to assessing university work). The overall score allocated depicts the University’s level of green awareness. This year Solent ranked 73 out of 142, up 38 places from last year.

The criterion included; environmental policy, management staff, environmental auditing and management systems, ethical investment, carbon management, ethical procurement, sustainable food, staff and student engagement, curriculum, energy sources, waste and recycling, carbon reduction and water reduction.

The University gained an excellent score in the areas of carbon emissions, water use and waster/recycling, and showed good improvement in carbon management and ethical investment.

Solent’s staff and student engagement showed a continued improvedment, with 10 areas gaining maximum points, including Go Green Week, space allocation for student food growing, fund allocation for sustainability projects and the Green Impact and Student Switch Off initiatives.

Martin Walton, Southampton Solent University’s Environmental and Sustainability Manager, said: “The University has worked hard to secure this improved result, and we are already considering how we can make future improvements.”
