Ikea winning displayWinners of the Southampton Solent University Design Award are now on display at the Southampton IKEA store.

Solent University and IKEA Southampton recently invited art and design students from the regions colleges to create a new product from two or more pieces of the store’s existing merchandise – the IKEAHack.

The winning designs – announced at an award ceremony held at the University last April - are now on display at the store over the summer until September.

As part of the process, the budding designers from Peter Symonds, Barton Peveril, Southampton City, Totton and Chichester Colleges were offered master classes from University design lecturers.  They also received guidance and mentoring advice from current Solent students studying Product Design.

A panel of University Design specialists including Solent University’s Academic Leader in Design, Mark Jones, and Rob Cooper, Marketing Manager at the Southampton store in Southampton awarded first (£100), second (£75) and third (£50) prizes to the best designs.

Marcus Biles (Peter Symonds College) collected first prize for his quirky mug-lamp. Second prize went to Jordan Collings (Totton College) who charmed the judges with a modern and attractive lounge chair and Alexsandra Wojciak (Chichester College) came third with an innovative bookcase.

As well as cash prizes, IKEA donated the products featured in the winning designs and Solent University’s design specialists helped them build working prototypes.
