Alex Box awarded Honorary Doctor of Design
Friday 25 November 2011
Southampton Solent University has awarded an honorary degree to an internationally renowned make-up artist known for pushing the boundaries with her visionary style.
Alex Box received the honorary degree of Doctor of Design during a ceremony at Southampton’s Guildhall on Friday 25 November.
Having studied fine art at Chelsea College of Art, Alex continued to explore the relationship between the body and environment as a make-up artist.
Her use of product, colour, line and texture in manipulating the surface of the face and body goes beyond beauty and continually probes the boundaries of how we fashion and present ourselves as individuals.
Having created cutting edge looks for designers from Gareth Pugh and McQueen to Anne Valerie Hash, Alex leads the field in experimental beauty and is now Creative Director of cutting edge make-up brand Illamasqua, which launched in 2008.
Her designs have featured in some of the world’s biggest glossy magazines, including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and V.
Alex is an outstanding role model for students on the University’s Make-Up design course. Her questioning of prevailing beauty ideals empowers them to question standard norms, break through preconceptions and establish new ways of looking at the body and face.
Alex said: “Receiving this award from Solent University is an incredible marker in my career and a great honour. I would like to say to the students, where you are sat today, I was once there too. To quote: ‘Fortune favours the brave’; believe with all your heart you will do what you were made to do.”
Almost 2500 students are graduating with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at Southampton guildhall from 21 – 25 November.
