Community spirited event for students

7 October 2011

Welcome to your neighbourhood event is on 14 OctoberTo encourage positive community relations and to welcome students moving into private rented accommodation, Southampton Solent University is holding its annual ‘Welcome to Your Neighbourhood’ event.

Taking place on Friday 14 October, 12-4pm at Central Baptist Church, Devonshire Road, the community focussed event will see the University, community partners, local residents and students joining together to get neighbourly and engender community spirit through volunteering.

With stalls, competitions, advice and activities, all students and local residents are welcome to pop by, say hello and get involved.

There will be a free BBQ, freebies and the chance for students to meet their new neighbours as they start to settle into the local area.

Students can find out more about the University’s support services, waste and recycling, employment, volunteering opportunities and accommodation advice as well as meeting key representatives that work in the community such as Hampshire Constabulary, the local PCSO’s, Southampton City Council’s Waste and Recycling and Safer Communities teams plus many more.

Students can also enter a competition to suggest a positive community campaign for a chance to win an iPad 2 – one of many other prizes kindly donated by West Quay, Ikea, Shakeaway, The Mayflower Theatre and The Art House Gallery Café.

This event is the culmination of a week-long campaign where student volunteers have delivered the University’s Student Survival Guide to each house in the Polygon containing comprehensive information on student safety, community news and key contact information for emergencies.

Amber Wilson, the University’s Community Relations Officer says: “We’re urging students to be good neighbours and help improve their communities. We hope that this event will encourage community volunteering in the students’ own local area.”
