Southampton Solent University has awarded former Totton College principal Mark Bramwell an honorary degree for his contribution to further education.
Mark Bramwell received the honorary degree of Doctor of Education from the University during a ceremony at Southampton’s Guildhall on Thursday 24 November.
During his career Mark has worked in three sixth form colleges and numerous secondary schools.
Previously the Vice-Principal of a college in Manchester, Mark moved down south in 1994 when he became principal of Totton College. During his time at the College Mark saw it transform from one of the smallest in Hampshire to one of the biggest in the UK.
He was a founding member of the Advisory Committee to the Secretary of State on Post 16 Citizenship and has a longstanding commitment to developing strong pathways between Further Education and Higher Education.
On receiving his award he said: “I have spent a lifetime in education and I strongly believe that people are born to learn. In these difficult times, education is more important than ever.
“When further education and higher education work closely together, as is the case with Totton College and Solent University, we can create opportunities and break down barriers, ensuring that people get a fair chance to experience post 16 education. This is beneficial to society, the economy and to individuals.”
He went on to add: “Solent University offers academic excellence and opportunity. It has a national and international reputation and it forms a critical part of the fabric of the city and the local region.”
Almost 2,500 students graduated with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at Southampton guildhall from 21 – 25 November.
