Managing Director of Newsquest Hampshire awarded honorary degree

Stewart Dunn, Managing Director of Newsquest Hampshire, celebrates receiving his honorary degreeManaging director of Newsquest Hampshire, Stewart Dunn, was awarded an honorary degree to recognise his outstanding contribution to the media industry.

The former Managing Director of the Southern Daily Echo received the honorary degree of Doctor of Media from Southampton Solent University during a ceremony at Southampton’s Guildhall on Wednesday 23 November.

Stewart has spent most of his working life in newspaper publishing and printing having started as a management trainee with United Newspapers in the North of England.

Before making the move down south, he also played a part in launching a commercial radio station in Leeds in the 1980s.

During his time as Managing Director of the Southern Daily Echo, Stewart helped to plan the newspaper’s £35 million move from the city centre to its new Greenfield site in Nursling.

As well as being the Managing Director of Newsquest Hampshire Stewart takes an active role in the community. He is director of Business Southampton, chairman of the Hampshire Economic Partnership and director and former president of the Southampton & Fareham Chamber of Commerce.

Stewart said:” “Solent University graduates, armed with degrees, as well as practical experience and skills, are ideally placed for the rapid changes occurring within the media industry.”

 “The regional news industry is very important and I am proud of the work that the Daily Echo and Solent University have done to encourage this industry and develop local graduate job opportunities to help the local economy."

Almost 2,500 students are graduating with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at Southampton guildhall from 21 – 25 November.

Southampton Solent University offers more than 19,000 students over 200 qualifications ranging from HND to PhD, in subjects such as maritime education and training, fashion and design, media and television, music, sport and leisure, business, IT and technology.

Solent has set its fees for 2012 at £7,800, rather than at the maximum level, because it is determined to achieve a fair balance between the commitment to offering places based on student potential - irrespective of family income - and the need to continue to improve the experience of the students attending the University.
