Music maestro receives honorary degree

Mike Moran receives his honorary award of Doctor of MusicOne of the UK’s best known musicians received an honorary degree from Southampton Solent University today, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the music industry.

Mike Moran was awarded with the honorary degree of Doctor of Music during a ceremony at Southampton’s Guildhall on Tuesday 22 November.  

Following his graduation from London’s Royal College of Music, Mike has gone on to have a highly successful and distinguished career in different areas of the music industry.

As a keyboard player, arranger, musical director and producer, he has worked with some of music's biggest superstars, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, George Michael, Placido Domingo, Gladys Knight and Ozzy Osbourne. He also worked extensively with Freddie Mercury on the album Barcelona.

As well as his work with some of music’s biggest name’s Mike has composed music for over 100 networked TV productions and more than 20 feature films – including Time Bandit.

He has also conducted some the world’s finest orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, Tokyo Philharmonic, Adelaide Philharmonic and the Sydney Symphony.

Mike is a Professor of Jazz Piano at London’s Royal College of music and was awarded the Gold Badge of Merit from the British Academy of Songwriters and Composers in 2007.

More than 2,500 students are graduating with degrees and professional qualifications during 10 ceremonies at the Southampton Guildhall from 21–25 November.
