Peter Hodges awarded Visiting Fellowship
Tuesday 8 November 2011
After a lifetime of service in the music publishing, recording, film and television industries, Peter Hodges has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship from Southampton Solent University.
Peter’s career in music started in 1967 at the Essex Music Group, where he was responsible for negotiating and contracting many of their talented composers, recording artistes and record producers – including Procul Harum, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and iconic British comedian Spike Milligan.
He moved to Southern Television in Southampton as Contracts Head working across areas of news, current affairs, light entertainment, drama, opera, and children’s programmes and served on the ITV Network as a negotiator for all Talent Unions and Rights holders.
Peter was later appointed Head of Production Rights for BBC Radio and Television. As head of BBC Copyright, he is acknowledged as having taken a leading role in instituting and developing the standards to ensure a full and current awareness of the pitfalls of international licensing and regulation relating to all types of production.
In 2009 he was appointed to the University’s Advisory Group at Solent Media Academy. He has continued to undertake Master classes for students on copyright, business affairs, providing advice and support for media students and professionals.
He also acts as an adviser on contractual terms and copyright for Solent Productions - the University's media production centre.
On receiving his award Peter said: “I would like to express my appreciation for the award and pay tribute to the excellent work of the University. Solent Skillset Academy continues to help create producers, directors and accomplished programme makers of tomorrow.
“Meeting the students and seeing their ambitions to pursue the passion they have decided to follow encourages me greatly.”
Peter was presented with his Visiting Fellowship on 3 November by the Head of School in Media, Paul Marchbank, before delivering a masterclass on copyright to staff and students from across the media and music courses.
