Solent leads on Widening Access
Thursday 6 October 2011
The Office For Fair Access (OFFA) recently released figures showing the performance of English universities in widening access. Southampton Solent University yet again appears in the top group of universities, meeting or exceeding the key performance indicators.
It is notable that this achievement, which maintains an excellent long term record on widening access, takes place in the context of rising entry qualifications to courses at Solent.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jane Longmore, commented: “It is extremely gratifying that we continue to perform at the top of the sector for widening access, but what is really satisfying is that as the UCAS entry points have risen for students, this trend has been maintained. This clearly demonstrates that raising standards and widening access can go hand in hand.”
The University is developing a range of new activities to engage with schools and colleges in line with the access agreement for 2012 entry and continues to collaborate with other universities and agencies in the region to ensure that key messages-concerning the new fees system and allied financial support - are received by students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
