Synergy with housing education

Synergy with housing educationA new relationship between Southampton Solent University and Poole-based Synergy Housing is providing an alternative model to traditional education routes.

Synergy Housing has established two apprenticeships, which will be supported through an intensive two-year programme of work and study.

At the same time Solent University has moved away from its day release Housing Diploma to a series of short, professional development units, to meet shifting employer needs.

The courses meet the University’s strict requirements for academic rigour but allow flexibility for work-based learning. The increased contribution made by the employers in terms of knowledge, support and facilities is recognised in lower fees.

Participants benefit from analysis of ‘live’ case studies and real-world policies and procedures, while being supported in developing the analytical and critical thinking approaches required for academic success.

Although each course stands alone, a number of different courses build up significant university credits that contribute towards the Chartered Institute of Housing’s professional qualification.

Course Leader, Bob Keats said: “The students will spend less time in the classroom, but are still required to have the necessary discipline of learning and applying knowledge to the workplace. Using local ‘clusters’ it’s expected that students will be able to interact with others from different employers and explore different approaches to management practices.”

Rosie Green, Head of Business Support (People & Places) at Synergy Housing said: “Synergy Housing believes it is important to have succession planning in place and therefore developed this brand new apprenticeship programme to provide staff with an opportunity to train to become a housing officer. When considering study methods available, Solent’s approach to learning and their desire to partner with us stood out and we are excited to be entering into this new method of learning with them.”

Synergy Housing Apprentice Jemma Featch added, “This is a fantastic opportunity which I am extremely proud to be selected for. Having the opportunity to work across departments, learning practically whilst being able to study a professional qualification makes the apprenticeship a must. It is a very diverse program which I cannot wait to get stuck in to!”

Stacey Bury, Neighbourhood Manager at Synergy Housing said, “Working with the Chartered Institute of Housing and Solent University on this dynamic approach is a win-win situation for employers looking for the right skills and employees wanting to establish a career in the housing industry. Moving away from the traditional methods of teaching, it recognises that a hands-on approach has many benefits in developing staff skills to deliver excellent customer services to our residents.”
