Students take on Big Music Challenge

30 January 2012

As part of their university project, (L-R) Matt Mcilroy, Lisa Marie Holdway and James Andrews will be chasing after clues across the British Isles as they take part in the Big UK Music Challenge. As part of their university project, a trio of students from Southampton Solent University will be chasing after clues across the British Isles as they take part in the Big UK Music Challenge.

Over the course of five days the team will be given clues by music experts from the British Music Experience – an interactive museum of popular music at the O2 in London. The clues will take them to 10 musical heritage sites across the UK mainland. Only when they have solved each clue will they be able to proceed to the next destination.

The Big UK Music Challenge is the brain child of second-year BSc (Hons) Live and Studio Sound students Matt Mcilroy, James Andrews and Lisa Marie Holdway.

The music minded team mates will begin their challenge on 6 February 2012 at the O2 Arena in London.

Roger Simmons, from the British Music Experience, said: “We are really excited to be involved in this project with these proactive students!  There are not many better ways to see the UK than on a music tour, but we'll make sure it's a challenge too.”

There will be little chance to sleep or relax as the team has to research each new location en route and prepare themselves to present a documentary-style piece to camera on arrival.

As the use of sat nav and GPS devices is completely off limits during the challenge, the intrepid trio are busy brushing up on their map reading skills before heading out across the country.

Matt Mcilroy said: “The idea came from a Year 2 project but just grew into something much bigger than we expected. We wanted to raise awareness of the UK’s musical heritage and wanted to do it in a way that was humorous, informative and more than just a run of the mill documentary.

“What makes this project so exciting is the fact that we’ve no idea where this challenge will take us. We could be sent to Liverpool, the home of the Beatles, Manchester, where The Smiths got their big break or back to London to visit the Abbey Road studios.”
