Grumpy baby student film
January 2012
Two final year Solent University students have produced a film for the NHS to help raise awareness of the health visiting profession.
‘Grumpy Baby|’ – which tackles the myth that health visitors just weigh babies - forms part of a campaign to raise the profile of health visiting as a key service for new parents and a rewarding career for healthcare professionals.
BA (Hons) Film students Greg Michael and Reese Howard produced the film - shown through the eyes of a small child – as part of a Solent University Solent Creatives project.
The film – which took about three months to make – was inspired by Channel 4’s Mitchell and Webb comedy series’ Peep Show.
“It was fascinating working with a two-year-old as the central character. James was really good, but sometimes it was hard to get him to sit still and look in the right direction,” said Greg, who is planning to set up his own promotional film business.
Clare Messenger, Associate Director of Children and Young People at South Central Strategic Health Authority, said: “The students’ innovative approach and fresh perspective helped produce a video which should get people talking.”
South Central NHS is recruiting more than 150 Health Visitors (or Trainee Specialist Community Public Health Nurses) to start training this September to support families across the region.
“Health visiting is a very attractive career option; you’re not stuck in an office and you get to make a real difference to families. It’s not just about weighing babies. Health Visitors work with women throughout pregnancy, new-born babies and children up to the age of five.
“We are seeking qualified healthcare professionals and students, passionate about the health and wellbeing of children, looking for a new career opportunity. This is an exciting time to join the health visiting profession. The service is being expanded and modernised to ensure there are enough health visitors to give all children a healthy start in life and parents the support they need,” said Clare.
