Eco Ernie scoops sponsorship from Enterprise

The Eco Ernie recycling project has received a generous donation from the Enterprise Holdings Foundation, as part of its commitment to community-benefiting activities.Eco Ernie Enterprise 2013

The eco project run by Southampton Solent University and Solent Students’ Union will benefit from the cash donation of £1000 ahead of its first 2013 collection in April followed by a second session at the end of June.

The Enterprise Holdings Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand that operates across Europe.

Jim Burrell, Senior Vice President, European operations, for Enterprise said: “We are pleased to support this project, which is consistent with our commitment to operate our business in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner.”

The grant will help provide Eco Ernie volunteer uniforms, a new security lock for the milk float, marketing and promotional material, a ‘Thank You’ barbecue for volunteers as well as support packs featuring first aid kits and volunteer certificates.

Stephanie Powell, Vice President for Engagement of Solent Student’s Union said: “Eco Ernie is a fabulous community-friendly commodity, run by the students at Solent University. Projects include recycling collections in the Polygon and the annual ‘Big Sort’ event which raises money for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

We would like to thank the Enterprise Holdings Foundation for its kind donation, which will enable us to keep Ernie on the road!”

The innovative collaborative project was created by the University and the Solent Students’ Union in partnership with Southampton City Council and Bag it up (Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance). It was first launched in 2009 to help combat the waste left behind by students moving out of their rental accommodation in the heavily student-populated Polygon area.

Over the years, the Eco Ernie project has grown from strength to strength with many local student and non-student volunteers helping out. Students and local residents have become familiar with Ernie and give him a lot of support during his travels.

Southampton Solent University offers more than 19,000 students over 200 qualifications ranging from HND to PhD, in subjects such as maritime education and training, fashion and design, media and television, music, sport and leisure, business, IT and technology.
