Solent graduates win RTS Award
Graduates from Southampton Solent University have come out from hiding behind the sofa to celebrate after their short horror film, The Marrowing, received a prestigious award from the Royal Television Society’s (RTS) Southern Centre.
The film, which tells the story of an elderly couple with a murderous streak, picked up the award for Undergraduate Entertainment at the RTS Student Television Awards last Friday.
Winners from the regional rounds will now go on to face each other at the national awards being held at the Barbican, London on Friday 17 May.
The full award-winning film can be viewed here.
Co-written by Hayley Smith, who currently works for Solent University’s media production company Solent Productions, and Comedy, Writing & Performance graduate Rob Jones, The Marrowing fought off competition from students across the south.
Hayley and Rob called on former coursemates, Matthew Wootton (producer), Tom Perrigo (DOP, camera), Lloyd Thompson (production manager), Lewis Walsh (production assistant) and Jonathan Schofield (post production) to form the production crew, while BA (Hons) Special Effects students were drafted in to help create some of the gore.
Speaking after picking up their award, Hayley said: “It is hugely gratifying to have our film recognised by the Royal Television Society. This film would not exist if it weren’t for the backing and support of the lecturers and technical staff who gave us the opportunity to explore our creative passions and hone our technical skills.
