Professor Richard Penson

Professor of Engineering Education

 

Richard Penson served an engineering apprenticeship with Beeston Boiler Co Ltd from 1961 to 1963 and from 1963 to 1967 studied for a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Loughborough University. In 1967 he joined Plessey Aerospace, Titchfield, Hampshire working in the research and development department and in 1969 they sponsored him for a one-year study leave at Southampton University where he obtained an MPhil in Control Systems. From 1973 to 1976 he worked in the environmental control field in England and Scotland and in 1976 was appointed Lecturer in Control Systems at Napier University, Edinburgh.

 

Professor Richard Penson In 1984 he was appointed Principal Lecturer in Automation and Control at Southampton Institute and was Deputy Head of Engineering from 1989 to 1993, Assistant to the Director of the Technology School from 1993 to 1995, Head of Manufacturing Engineering from 1995 to 2000 and from 2000 to 2005 was Associate Dean (External Development) for the Faculty of Technology. During his time at Southampton Institute he has developed a number of full and part-time degree programmes and has held external examinerships at Napier University, Swansea Institute, Plymouth University and UWE. He is currently an external examiner at LJM, Megatech - KL and BCUC. He also serves on the IMechE, the IET and the IIE's Course Accreditation Panels, and serves on the Organising Committee for the Engineering Education conference. He also serves on the editorial committee for the BJEE.

 

His current research interests include 'Intracranial Hypertension - Simulation, Time & Frequency Domain Analysis, Wigner-Ville analysis and Wavelet analysis of medical signals', in conjunction with Southampton University and Southampton General Hospital. He is also currently Deputy Chair of the Wessex Round Table of Inventors (WRTI) and organises their annual Innovation awards for Product Design and Engineering Design sponsored by the area committee of the IMechE.
