Simon Brown | Staff Profile | Southampton Solent University
Dr Simon Brown
Head of School, Faculty of Business, Sport and Enterprise
Simon Brown joined Southampton Solent University as the Director of the then newly formed Southampton Business School. Prior to joining the University, Simon spent 19 years at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU).
Combining his valuable field experience and his passion for teaching, Simon established an academic subject group around Enterprise and a portfolio of successful multidisciplinary degrees. Simon's courses have a reputation for developing highly employable and enterprising graduates. Simon used this experience to lead a bid to HEFCE to recognise this excellence in the field of graduate employability.
Increasingly, Simon advises nationally and internationally on how to make the curriculum more enterprising, develop highly employable graduates and support graduate entrepreneurs.
Simon’s priorities in his first few months at Southampton Solent University are to organise and align the Business School so that it can respond to the many pressures and opportunities that are being thrown up by the recession and local challenges. His aim is to make Southampton Business School the business school of choice for the region.
Industry experience
Simon also has extensive experience working in industry and was involved in building a business from a micro start-up to a multinational employing around 200 staff world-wide (Applied Holographics PLC, now Applied Optical Technologies).
Awards
In 2004 his work was acknowledged and he became the first Director for a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) in the area of employability (Embedding, Integrating and Enhancing Employability - e3i).
