Maritime and Technology Faculty

The disciplines of maritime and technology are inextricably linked at Southampton Solent University, with overlap in a number of areas of research and enterprise.

Maritime

Warsash Maritime Academy provides specialist research and consultancy services to the maritime industry, particularly in the field of maritime human factors. Core to its business are:
  • education and training to reduce accidents and improve safety
  • research in seafarer employment and human resource management issues
  • analysis of casualties and development of near-miss and incident reporting systems

The Academy’s work also includes port development projects, such as realigning existing berths, examining proposals for new berths, testing against specific combinations of meteorological conditions and investigating tug requirements and techniques.

Technology

The technology aspect of the Faculty has particular research and enterprise strengths in the following areas:

Built environment investigates, develops and tests innovative new ways of delivering efficient design, construction and operation of constructed facilities in a sustainable manner using experiments, virtual design and simulation studies.

Entertainment technology develops leading research and consultancy in both subject and educational research relating to technology in the media industries.

Informatics develops innovative computing solutions with particular emphasis on information systems and knowledge management.

Sustainability investigates sustainability issues in a range of industry sectors, including fashion, leisure and maritime.
