Michael Mungai, Lecturer

Biography

Michael has maritime experience spanning over 20 years. He was first enlisted in the Navy where he served for eight and half years before joining the Merchant Navy in 2009. He joined Warsash Maritime Academy in 2010 and has done all his academic courses up to BSc (Hons) in Maritime Operations and professional courses of OOW, Chief Mate and Master Mariner courses in the same institution.

Before joining Warsash Maritime School as a lecturer, Michael worked in Kenya in various capacities. He joined the Maritime Administration of Kenya as a trainee surveyor. He moved through the ranks to the positions of Marine Officer Class 1 and eventually was appointed a port state control officer.

During his stint at the Maritime Administration, Michael was involved in a number of duties, ranging from port and flag surveys and inspections, marine casualty investigations, maritime pollution prevention and enforcement, and development of various legislative instruments to enforce the Merchant Shipping Act. He has also conducted ISM and maritime audits of various ports and maritime institutions in Kenya.

Michael was the lead expert in the development of a maritime pollution course - a project sponsored by the European Union. He conducted the trainer of trainers course for the inter-agency participants in readiness to deliver the curriculum that had just been developed.

Michael represented Kenya as the head of delegation to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the Marine Environmental Protection Committee, the Navigation Search and Rescue, and the pollution prevention sub-committees. He also represented Kenya in the Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding regional Port State Control meetings in the Maldives, Bangladesh, and the Seychelles.
