Sporting successes
With the majority of sporting seasons coming to a close, Team Solent, once again, has plenty to shout about.
Sailing
For the past decade, Southampton Solent University sailors have dominated the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) competition - and this year is no different. Guy Jackson and crew, and 2009 reigning champion Chris Witty and crew, took 1st and 2nd places respectively to secure the BUCS Yachting Championships for another year.
Basketball
After a fantastic run of form, the men’s basketball team will be playing their fixtures in the English National division three next season after gaining promotion from division 4. The team also reached the national semi-finals and was unlucky to lose out to high-flying Nottingham.
American football
Remaining unbeaten throughout the year and winning the South West Division, the newly formed Redhawks American Football team have also had a fantastic run. Since splitting from their University of Southampton counterparts, the Redhawks hoped to reach the final of the playoffs but were beaten in the penultimate round by Hertfordshire. Formed only last year, Team Solent expects great achievements from a team with such a bright future.
Indoor cricket
The indoor cricket side was also unfortunate not to walk away from the BUCS National final with gold, losing to Loughborough in the final stages.
Football
For a consecutive year, Solent’s men’s football team find themselves in the final of the Hampshire Senior’s cup, defending their 2009 title when they take on VT reserves this Thursday at St Mary’s stadium. Tickets – at £5 – are available at the ground on the day.
Hockey
First-year Sports Coaching student Louise Taylor will be playing for the English Universities Women’s Hockey team at the Home Nations championship in Edinburgh next week. Another STAND student Jonathan Price (2nd year Sports Coaching) has also been selected to play for the England Universities Men’s team at the same tournament.
Oscar's 'ultimate' Challenge
Solent sailing star Oscar Mead may have taken the sailing world by storm when he raced solo across the Atlantic at just 18, but his next venture will be his biggest challenge yet.
The 19-year-old, second-year BEng (Hons) Yacht and Powercraft Design student plans to compete against some of the world’s top sailors for the 30,000-mile VELUX 5 OCEANS race which starts in France in October.
After hitting the headlines for becoming the youngest person ever to compete in the Original Singlehanded Transatlantic Race (OSTAR), Oscar is setting his sights on the VELUX 5 OCEANS, a race dubbed the ‘Ultimate Solo Challenge’.
If he enters, Oscar will put his course on hold for a year, but he is ready for the commitment: “Racing across the Atlantic was one thing but going round the world into the VELUX 5 OCEANS is a bigger challenge. I plan to enter the VELUX 5 OCEANS not as an adventure but as a race I will try to win.”
