1. What were you doing before university?

I was working full time for Sun Life Financial of Canada. I worked in the Pensions Department in an administration role for seven years. My duties included processing data and training new members of staff.

2. How did you get into university?

I obtained 10 GCSEs (graded C and above) and went on to study for A' levels for two years. Following college I went into full time employment as above and worked for that company for seven years.

3. Why did you decide to go to university?

As much as I enjoyed working with my colleagues I felt that there wasn't much room for progression within my role. The company was down sizing and many redundancies were made. On a personal level I felt university was something I should have tried, not just for the qualification but for the life experience you gain from it.

4. Did you have any reservations about studying at university, and if so to what extent are these being realised?

My main reservation was and still is in relation to the financial situation that I will have to study in. I do have faith however that things will work out and am very determined to get my degree.

5. As a mature student do you think you are having a different univeristy experience, and how do you feel you fit in with the traditional students?

As I have been at Southampton Solent University for only a few weeks I am only able to comment on my recent experiences. I do feel different and perhaps I am taking my time here more seriously than the younger students. This is because I have had to give up a full time job so I can return to full time education. It may be that I feel the importance of getting this degree more than the 'traditional' students.

6. Do you think the university experience is changing you?

So far, I feel a lot happier in myself as I have a positive goal that I am aiming for. Over the coming months I am sure I shall change more - I think for the better.

7. Do you have any advice for a prospective mature student?

I would encourage anyone who is thinking of becoming a mature student. I think you have nothing to lose - but something very worthwhile to gain.
