1. Why did you decide to stay living at home while studying at University?
Many factors, I had a job here, I knew people here and mainly because I was probably afraid to move away. Also I knew it would be more difficult financially. I wouldn't get any money from my parents. I thought overall it would be much easier living at home.
2. Did you have any reservations about living at home while studying, and if you did so to what extent were these realised?
Not really, I thought it would be just like going to school and college. I do find people who live away from home make friends at halls and they often all go out together (but I don't feel that restricts me) - they also have the freedom to do whatever they want. I often get pressure at home that students living away from home may not get.
3. Do you think living at home has had any affect on your academic success?
Yes and no. I think it's easier for me to do my work as I am in my home environment, but because I am at home I often have many distractions so it stops me from working sometimes. Students who live away from it all can be totally focused; although having said that I am sure they have their own distractions.
4. What do you see as the benefits of living at home while attending the University?
Save money, less stress and generally less uproar…. A lot of students I know go home during holidays and often miss home - even though living away from home gives them freedom to do whatever they want.
5. Do you think you think you are in a better position financially because you live at home?
Yes, although my financial position isn't all that great - I wouldn't be able to afford a car and its running costs if I lived away from home.
6.How do you feel your experiences differed from students who live in student accommodation?
Obviously they make friends and meet more students as they mostly live near each other - most of them are party animals and are always going out. However I feel I am in a stronger financial position than them and some of them seem to have loads of stress that I don't.
7. Do you have any advice for prospective students considering studying while living at home?
If you have a lot of stress/problems at home then it maybe better for you to move away as you then focus more on your work. However it will put more pressure on you as you won't have as much money - I think how much money your parents give you will play a big factor in it - some students get hundreds from their parents every month!
Living at home for me means going to uni is just like going to college, I still have all my friends from work but I get to meet new people at uni.
Overall if I had the choice again - I would still live at home.
