What can I study?

These days you can study virtually anything, for example here at Southampton Solent University our courses| range from business studies to football studies, and from computing to architectural technology. There are hundreds of courses out there, and you should choose which one best fits your needs.

The information contained here will give you an idea of the types of things you need to consider when looking at courses:

Not sure what to study?

It's worth thinking about a subject that you have a genuine interest in, as this will make learning easier. Have a think about what you're good at and what you enjoy.

Requirements of certain professions

It's important to remember that certain professions require specific qualifications, so choose your course carefully. The Direct Gov| website will be helpful in finding out whether this is the case for you. In addition to this you may wish to contact the professional body you are interested in joining to obtain their advice.

Sandwich courses

It is also important to consider the format of a course. Many courses offer a 'sandwich' year, where time is spent within a chosen industry working for a company. Valuable work experience can be gained to give you a head start when you graduate. You will also be paid during this year!

Researching courses

It is very important to research the course you're thinking of studying. Look at the prospectus in detail: what compulsory modules are part of the course? Are there any that worry you? If so look at other universities you are interested in to see whether there are any other similar courses that don't include that module. You may be surprised by some of the content, for example sociology degrees can contain a module on statistics. Do your research to ensure there's no nasty surprises when you come to start your course.
