General Information
Can I go to university?
If you want to go to university, then you can! You are normally required to have five GCSEs graded A to C, including Maths and English. Following this you will usually need to continue with your studies for a further two years either in the sixth form of your school or in a sixth form or further education college.
However, it is worth remembering that this is not the only route to university. There are other progression paths, such as those featured on the Direct Gov| website. Alternatively, speak to your Personal Adviser (with a careers specialism).
What can I study there?
These days you can study just about anything! The things you need to think about are:
-
Is there a particular career you would like to follow? Do you need to study a specific subject for that career?
-
Are there any subjects which you particularly enjoy studying?
-
What activities do you enjoy?
-
What hobbies or interests do you have?
There are more than 50,000 university courses available in this country, so there should be something out there that takes your fancy! Here at Southampton Solent University you can choose from a huge variety of full-time and part-time undergraduate courses|; anything from the more traditional Law, Engineering and Business programmes, to the less traditional Football Studies, Computer & Video Games, and Film & Television Studies.
The UCAS website| will provide you with a comprehensive picture of all the different courses that are available all over the country.
How long does it take to study for a degree?
If you are studying for a degree on a full-time basis you will normally study for three to four years. Some full-time degrees can include a placement year, where you get some valuable work experience (these are normally incorporated in degrees that take four years). Part-time degrees can take anything from four to six years to complete.
