Creating Documentaries at Glastonbury 2010

Unveiling the hidden gems of Glastonbury

Steve CloseFilming artists and interviews is all fun but Solent needs a lasting memory of their time at Glastonbury festival 2010. Many students involved with the festival and Solent Productions have created a series of documentaries for various outlets including the Glastonbury and Solent websites.

Three documentaries about the festival have been edited by students and Solent Productions. These documentaries will be shown on the official Glastonbury website, the official Solent website and You Tube as well as being submitted to a number of short film festivals and the Royal Television Society awards.

As well as these great pieces of film, Solent Production’s Technical Producer, Craig Lee shot and edited a 3D documentary of the festival as part of ongoing research. This documentary will also be entered into the RTS awards.

Glastonbury TV have also asked Solent Productions to put together a half hour documentary for the Emerging Talent competition which is held annually in Somerset, finishing at Glastonbury. This will be distributed via the popular Q magazine as well as the Glastonbury website.

These documentaries show the amazing work that students and Solent Productions are capable of and they are great for everyone to see what is going on at the University. They are of such a professional quality that they are being entered into national competitions and are a great launching pad to advertise the University and show just what a great relationship we have with Glastonbury festival.

Glastonbury’s Exectutive Producer for Television, Ben Challis, worked closely with Solent Productions and was keen to share his experience, saying:

“Glastonbury's relationship with Southampton Solent University has gone from strength to strength. This year, forty one students and staff filmed the stages at two of our venues, Dance East and the Leftfield. Solent were also responsible for providing a news feed on friday night, filming three of our Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition winners, providing footage for international broadcasters and Solent also provided us with three documentary films after the Festival ended. This year I was particularly pleased that the BBC used some of Solent's footage from Dance East in their 'Red Button' service and that Channel 4 used some of Solent's N-Dubz footage in a documentary about the band. The Festival is delighted to be able to provide real work experience for the students - as well as being able to use the fruits of their labours - hopefully in one of those 'win win' relationships where everyone can see a real benefit.”
