Filming the Leftfield Stage
Our students got stuck into the Leftfield Stage, filming and interviewing artists. For the third year running, Solent students have coordinated multi camera coverage of the festival for Glastonbury TV.
Student Amy Wallington was on site to direct four short films for the official Glastonbury website. The coverage was shot, edited and uploaded on site and aimed to give the festival goers and those that weren’t so lucky to be there, a flavour of Glastonbury life that isn’t usually seen on mainstream coverage.
Solent Productions Intern Elliot Taylor was also on site to help out with the four films that were being shot for the website. Elliot started on site as a Post Production Supervisor and was quickly promoted to Production Coordinator. “As Production Coordinator I was soon responsible for all three documentary crews and supervising the Outside Broadcast crew at Dance East. It was also my responsibility to outline what format the different crews (including the OB crew at Leftfield) were filming in and to organise schedules of filming when the BBC asked us for footage,” he said.
2010 was Elliot’s third year at Glastonbury festival. Talking about his experiences, he said;
“As this is my third year attending the festival with Solent, I feel I have learnt a lot about what it is like not only in working on location, but also for delivering high standards of footage to a big client.
“I feel students learn more about themselves in terms of what they are capable of and how to work in a high pressure environment, rather than what they learn technically. This is the kind of stuff that's unteachable in the classroom, so it's a real benefit for those students who are lucky enough to go.”
Not only were the students covering the festival for UK websites and TV but their footage was also used on foreign networks, being the first port of call for foreign fans who were keen to see what was going on at the festival. The Friday News Tape was shot and edited and distributed on Friday evening to Reuters, Associated Press and Euronews and it featured all of the highlights from the Dance Village.
