Victoria Purcell - Worthy FM Presenter/interviewer

VickyBA (Hons) Media Culture and Production| student Victoria Purcell has spent the past year hosting her own radio show on Solent’s Radio Sonar, so when she spotted the opportunity for presenters at Worthy FM, Glastonbury festival’s official radio station, she jumped at the chance.

“Glastonbury festival is the biggest festival in Europe so it means a hell of a lot to me, to be able to present for the official radio station. I enjoyed every part of working for Worthy FM. I didn’t really ever stop working, but I didn’t want to stop. It was so much fun and I was constantly on the move around the site doing interviews/features.”

Landing herself a radio presenter job was a big deal, but it was extremely different from her stint at Radio Sonar, as she explained:

“At first it was very hard. On student radio I only did 1 hour 30 minute shows each week. On Worthy FM I was doing 3 hour shows every day, going out into the festival, catching bands for a quick chat and band interviews.”

Making her way around the site, Victoria managed to snatch some time with many of the artists that were performing at the festival.

“I interviewed The City Calls and Statement Code, who are both Solent bands. I got them to perform both live and acoustic tracks on my show.”

As well as showcasing the University’s own talent on her show, Victoria also met and interviewed some music giants, including Slash, Kate Nash, Fatboy Slim and Coheed and Cambria. She lists meeting Slash as one of her personal highlights of the festival.

Victoria is a great example of how Solent students are getting themselves involved and known in their chosen industries.

“I think it is so good that Solent students get the chance to work at Glastonbury. Having stuff like that on your C.V. helps towards your job after Uni. If you haven’t done any work experience how would you know what it was actually like to do the job you are applying for?”

Solent University has a huge presence at Glastonbury festival and Worthy FM was no exception. Victoria explained just how she and Solent worked with the radio station.
“Worthy FM teamed up with the BBC Radio 6 and this meant that for three hours a day the BBC would use Worthy FM to broadcast. In return, some of our presenters did features for the BBC and we got to go into the BBC Compound.”

This was the first year that Worthy FM has teamed up with the BBC and to have a Solent student in amongst the Worthy FM staff proves just how much the University is involved.
