STUDENT FUNDING for 2010-11

UK & EU Students in 2010

The information below is for guidance only and can vary considerably depending on individual circumstances and current government legislation. If you have any questions please contact us.|

The information may be relevant to eligible EU students. However, for those who DO NOT fulfill the UK residency criteria| please go to our EU Students page| on how to apply for your funding. 

Overseas students cannot apply and should go to our International pages.|

Important! if you:

  • have done ANY previous degree/HE study in the UK or OVERSEAS you might not be able to claim any help, including tuition fee loans. You MUST check with Student Finance England before you commit to a course. 
  • are thinking of changing, transferring or leaving your course please speak to Student Funding  or Student Finance England as soon as possible. It could have a significant affect on your student funding in the future.
  • are coming to university to do another degree or HND and it is classed as an 'ELQ' (Equivalent or lower qualification)  you may be charged a higher rate of fees. Always check with the University beforehand.

FULL-TIME Undergraduate funding 2010-11

Student funding is made up of grants, loans and bursaries|. You will need to know the household income thresholds for 2010-11 as it is always advisable to be income assessed (means tested):

THEREFORE, PLEASE NOTE:

  • 2007-08 entrants still come under the income threshold of below £39,333.
  • 2008-09 entrants the threshold will remain up to £60K (and up to £39,333 for the University Bursary).
  • 2009-10 entrants - the threshold will remain up to £50K for loans and grants (and up to £39,333 for the University Bursary).

Income figures below apply to 2010-11 NEW ENTRANTS ONLY:

Income thresholds for Maintenance Grant*/Loan**

  • income below £25,000 =  may get full grant / loan.
  • income between £25,001 and £50,020 = may get partial grant / loan.
  • income over £50,021 = No grant, but can get some loan.

Grants* (non-repayable) = up to £2,906

Maintenance grant

Special support grant

(if student has an underlying entitlement to benefits e.g. lone parent, disabled etc. you should request this grant so the benefits office will not include it as income).

Other grants

Some of these grants will depend on your household income and your individual circumstances. You apply on the PN1/ PR1 form. All Grants are split into 3 instalments over the academic year and are paid into your bank account over 3 terms.  If you have dependents you may be able to claim some of the following non-repayable grants & benefits:

Loans** (Repayable):

Tuition fee loan - Paid directly to the university/non-income assessed

  • Up to £3,290 for degrees - please check with your faculty Office
  • £2,150 for HND's
  • £2,150 for Foundation year

Maintenance loan - for living/course costs

The Maintenance Loan is split into 3 instalments over the academic year and paid into your bank account over 3 terms

  • Up to £4,950. This varies considerably depending on household income and level of maintenance grant you get.
  • If your Household income is £50,778 or less then you can get up to the full amount of Maintenance Loan (£4950). Anything above this income level - you will get a LOWER rate of loan.
  • You DO NOT have to take out this loan in order to get any maintenance grant/bursary or tuition fee loan.

How and when do I repay my loans?

Repayment will start once you have left university and are earning over £15,000.  This usually starts from the April after you finish your course . Go to the Student Loan Repayment |site for more information.

University Bursary (non-repayable):

Income Threshold:

below £25,000 (10/11 new entrants only) = may get full University Bursary|:

  • £750 (max) if paying fees of £3,290.
  • £250 (max) for HND & Foundation if you get exactly £2,906 maintenance grant.

If you are eligible, you will hear from the university in writing, as to the amount you are entitled to once approved on the system.  If you don't hear anything or have a query please email: bursary@solent.ac.uk|Payments are split into two instalments and paid into your bank account, usually in February and May.

Where do I apply for all my funding?

2010-11 NEW ENTRANTS apply via Student Finance England (SFE).

Pre-2009 entry students will continue to apply via their Local Authority (LA) for 2010.

How do I apply for all my funding?

You apply for ALL of the grants, loans and bursaries ( except the halls reduction) on one (PN1 or PR1) application form, each year.  Applications for 2010-11 are available from direct.gov.uk|.  According to SFE, applications can be made in advance (for example, September 2010 for September 2011 entry).

  • Students must register online and follow the application procedure.
  • Online applications are preferable, but paper applications are available to download or call the SFE helpline: 0845 300 5090 .
  • You can apply alongside your UCAS application form. Follow the links online.
  • You must complete a PN1 form (new entrants only) and read the notes when completing the form.
  • PR1 forms are for continuing  students. You may find you only have to confirm that your circumstances have not changed since last year. If they HAVE then you need to submit a 'change of circumstances' form.
  • You (and your parents, if applicable) MUST give 'CONSENT TO SHARE' for the University Bursary, on this application form. This is done by NOT ticking the box (on the declaration page). Failure to give consent will result in NO University Bursary being awarded.  This can be amended by all parties giving consent over the phone, call: 0845 6034016

What you may also apply for / get from the University:

  • ACCESS TO LEARNING FUND 
    - this is a non-repayable government grant administered by the Student Funding Team at the University. For eligibility criteria and more information please go to our webpage.
  • HALLS FEE REDUCTION
    - Student Residences (at SSU) = £250 (Non-income assesse).  Most students will get this automatically including overseas students, but NOT exchange students. This reduction has already been incorporated into our fee structure which means the Accommodation Fees shown are those that you pay. Please contact the Accommodation Office for further information.

Part-time students' funding

This is made up of two grants only.  For further information please go to:

Continuing UK & EU students (Pre - Sept 2006 entry)

  • Your fees will be £1,310
  • If your LA have given you a grant before to pay these they may continue to do so (subject to household income and length of study).
  • If you are assessed to pay your fees yourself you may be able to take out the tuition fee loan to pay them. This will be added to any student loans you may have taken out and must be repaid once you are earning £15,000 or more.
