The Registered Nurse (degree) apprenticeship offers the latest technologies and education to enable you to develop your clinical, assessment and decision-making skills. If you have the qualities and philosophy required to become a caring, effective, professional and safe practitioner, this course gives you the opportunity to fully explore what it means to be a Registered Nurse and to further develop the other qualities essential to this role.
We currently offer the Registered Nurse (Adult) pathway aligned to the Institute for Apprenticeships standard. The standard covers four core domains:
- Professional values
- Leadership management and team-working
- Nursing practice and decision-making
- Communication and interpersonal skills
As a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)-approved programme, we encompass the four themes of their professional code into everything we deliver:
- Prioritising people
- Practice effectively
- Preserve safety
- Promote professionalism and trust
This apprenticeship is underpinned by our BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Practice. On successful completion of the programme you’ll be eligible to apply to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as an adult nurse.

What does this course lead to?
Qualified nurses can undertake nursing roles in primary or secondary care, both in the UK and overseas. Graduates could also pursue a career in charity or aid work, or within the armed forces or prison service. With further experience, future careers can include advanced practice nursing, nurse education and mentoring, and healthcare management, such as ward sister or lead nurse.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in adult nursing within the NHS, private or community healthcare services. Prospective apprentices should currently be employed in a healthcare role. For more information about the professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates, please refer to the Code of Professional Standards (Nursing and Midwifery Council 2018).
Nurse apprentices will have access to the same facilities offered to students on the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Practice degree, as well as other full-time students. This includes access to all specialist labs and equipment relevant to your course of study, including our new nursing simulation suite.

Introduction to Communications and Person-Centred Practice
Introduction to Public Health and Health Promotion
This module will explore contemporary approaches to public health and examine the historical origins of the discipline in Britain which lie in the 19th century industrial age and the movement of populations from countryside to crowded cities. Public health utilises epidemiological and demographic data, and you will be introduced to the calculation of simple public health measures. Understanding the social determinants of health and the contribution of these to health inequalities entails new ways of thinking about social and economic organisation and governance in Britain. Public health expertise is increasingly important in diverse and complex 21st century societies and this module will help you to develop this expertise and apply it to your workplace role.
Introduction to Assessing Needs and Planning Care in Nursing
This module aims to support development of your knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours when caring for people with long-term conditions. You will explore the pathophysiology and aetiology of commonly occurring long-term conditions, the impact of the condition on an individual’s and family life, consider patient needs in community settings and explore patient transitions between different healthcare settings.

How you'll studyYou will learn through a combination of directed learning, collaborative learning and guided learning. You will also make use of the University's online learning platform Solent Online Learning (SOL).
You may be assessed by a combination of:
- Individual presentations
- Case studies
- Practical activities
- Reflective accounts
- End-point assessment
Students are assessed through a combination of academic assignments and occupational standards assessments. Coursework assignments can include presentations, essays, exams, case studies, practical assessments, and reflective accounts.

Businesses with an annual payroll above £3million will be classed as a levy paying employer and will be able to use funds accrued in their digital apprenticeship service (DAS) account for payment of the training. Please contact us for guidance on fees if you are a non-levy employer which will cover at least 95% of the costs.

Apprentices pay nothing towards their course fees
The course fees will be covered by your employer.

Earn while you learn
As an apprentice you'll earn while working and studying towards your degree.
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.
To study for an apprenticeship, you must be employed by a sponsoring organisation. The specific entry requirements will be agreed with your employer.
Applicants will need to provide evidence of their ability to study at FHEQ Level 4. GCSEs at grades C or above in English and Maths (or their equivalents) are essential.
Applicants must also have a level 3 qualification or equivalent healthcare experience which can be shown via a mature entry portfolio. Candidates should expect to undergo a values based admissions selection process including an interview and assessment.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship offers a unique blend of work experience and academic study. Candidates on an apprenticeship will work a paid job while simultaneously working towards a relevant qualification in their chosen field.
Apprentices are employees with a contract of employment which offers the same benefits and protections as any other employee. Apprentices will typically work for four days of the week, using the remaining day to attend classes and study.
Higher degree apprenticeships
Solent offers a diverse range of higher and degree apprenticeships, all of which are underpinned with recognised and transferable degree qualifications (BA, BSc, etc).
Higher apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships give employees the opportunity to upskill in their chosen field or retrain for a new career while working.
