About the course

The theoretical elements of the course will consolidate the key technical aspects of goalkeeping together with the role of the goalkeeper coach, the development of young goalkeepers and goalkeeping growth and development.

Course pre-requisites

Candidates must:

  • Hold the 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football.
  • Show evidence of having successfully attended The FA Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop.
  • Show evidence of having successfully attended The FA Emergency Aid course.
  • Provide a FAN number to enrol in this course. To obtain or retrieve a FAN number, please go online at: https://secure.thefa.com/FAN/Register.aspx. This is to ensure your attendance is recorded against the correct Football Association account.
  • Be aged 17 years or older to take part in this course.

What you'll study

Course content
  • Specific goalkeeping warm ups and cool downs.
  • Coaching basic individual goalkeeping techniques and skills including footwork, general handling techniques, shot stopping, dealing with crosses, and goalkeeper distribution and communication Understanding how to develop and improve goalkeeping skills and techniques.
  • Planning and preparing progressive skill/technical practices.
  • Maintaining the health and safety of the players and other coaches.
  • Maintaining the high standards of conduct to promote Association Football.
Course exam/certificate

In order to gain this qualification, you must:

  • Attend all course hours, successfully complete the tasks/project within your learning journal, all relevant e-learning modules and deliver a successful practical.
  • Provide your FAN number.
  • Hold a current FA Introduction to First Aid (formerly FA Emergency Aid), FA Safeguarding Children, FA Level 1 in Coaching Goalkeepers and minimum FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football qualification.

Your future

This course is for those who have completed the FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Goalkeeping course and who wish to build upon the knowledge learned and gain further practical skills to coach young goalkeepers at junior, youth or non-league levels.
