About the course

You have access to the latest equipment, software and facilities for acoustics measurement and modelling and you are taught by an experienced teaching team with consultancy and research expertise in outdoor events and environmental noise.

From the growing number of outdoor music festivals and increases in vehicle and aircraft movements to developments in fields such as renewable energy, the ability to correctly measure and monitor noise is a key requirement of planning and regulating noise in a variety of areas.

The Institute of Acoustics (IoA)’s Certificate of Competence in Environmental Noise Measurement is designed for professionals who may not need more formal qualifications in acoustics. These include environmental health officers, health and safety officers, sound engineers, event managers, urban planners, environmental consultants, HVAC engineers and construction managers.

Holders of the CCENM are entitled to apply for technician membership of the IOA, subject to one year’s experience working in a relevant area.

Your future

The IoA Certificate of Competence is a highly valuable qualification both for new staff in acoustics consulting and for anyone involved in planning outdoor developments or events (including events management companies, architects, architectural technologists and development officers for large companies).

It is also relevant for people who are consulting on noise impact (for example as part of an environmental impact assessment) or responsible for enforcing legislation on noise pollution (environmental health officers).

The certificate is also a core part of CPD for many other fields, in particular environmental health and environmental consulting, and successful completion allows you to apply for technician-grade membership of the Institute of Acoustics.

Graduates from this course have worked in Local Authorities, acoustic consultancies, environmental consulting, facilities management, event management and live sound.

We offer opportunities to continue study in Acoustics with the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control (meeting the educational requirement for corporate membership of the IoA), and also offer an MSc in Applied Acoustics.

Industry links

We have excellent links with a number of companies across the sector, as well as with the Institute of Acoustics and the Association of Noise Consultants.
