About the course

For those working in Civil Engineering, wishing to qualify as an EngTech (ICE).

Southampton Solent are pleased to offer a suite of courses aimed at anyone working in the civil engineering industry who is interested in qualifying as an EngTech with ICE.

The courses will help potential EngTechs to check their experience against ICE requirements, prepare the documentation for Review and, if wished, undertake a mock review.

These short courses are only suitable for candidates who have already achieved, or expect to achieve, the required academic qualifications for EngTech. Please see the ICE website for the full requirements.

The 2018/19 fees are not yet available. For guidance, the 2017/18 fees were:

  • £175 per delegate for day one (full day)
  • £175 per delegate for day two (full day)
  • £75 per delegate for day three (half day)

Key entry requirements

These courses are only suitable for candidates who have already achieved, or expect to achieve, the required academic qualifications for EngTech. Please see the ICE website http://www.ice.org.uk/qualification-careers/educationalbase for the full requirements. 

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

What you'll study

Day one – Are you ready for EngTech? (Full day)

The aim of this one day course is to enable you to check your experience against the standards for EngTech and to help you to:

  • Understand the recently updated/revised standards required for ICE membership at Engineering Technician (EngTech) level.
  • Rationalise your own experience and see how it fits in with the ICE requirements.
  • Identify any gaps or weaknesses in your experience which will need to be addressed before you apply for ICE membership at EngTech level.
  • Draw up a plan to proceed to Review or to address gaps before proceeding to review.

The course will be run as a series of short lectures interspersed with practical workshops.

Day two - Preparing the documentation for your Technician Professional Review (TPR) (Full day)

The aim of this one day course is enable you to prepare all the documentation required for you to apply for your TPR and will include:

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) documents
  • A one-page CV
  • Professional Review report
  • Appendices to your report
  • Advice on sponsor questionnaires

The course will be run as a series of short lectures interspersed with practical workshops.

Day three - Mock reviews (Half day)

The aim of this half day course is to provide an opportunity for Review candidates (who have already completed day two and prepared their review documentation) to have a mock review and to receive feedback on their performance and documentation. There will also be an opportunity to observe mock reviews for other candidates. 

*Please note: Days one and two may be taken by themselves or in combination with the other courses. However, day three is only available to students who have completed day two.

The Student Hub is a central space where you can access all of the information and support you need during your time at University.

Professional and experienced staff can help resolve any query, and if they cannot answer the question themselves they will find the person who can.

All three courses can be run ‘in-house’ at company premises if required and you’ll be taught by highly experienced lecturers.
