About the course

Would you like to brush up on your academic skills and industry knowledge before undertaking a full degree in events or tourism? This one year foundation course is ideally suited to students who don’t yet meet the entry requirements for a three-year honours degree, as well as those who feel like they would like to improve their academic skills before beginning a degree programme.

The Event and Tourism Foundation Year will build up your learning, communication, presentation, numeracy, IT and people skills, preparing you to progress onto one of the following degree programmes:

What does this course lead to?

The foundation year is specifically designed to provide the strong knowledge base you’ll need to take a place on one of Solent’s highly rated events and tourism courses, including events management, tourism management and international tourism management.

Who is this course for?

Students who are hoping to pursue a degree related to tourism or event management but do not meet the entry requirements for their chosen course can use this foundation year as a stepping stone into the first year of a degree.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2018/19 academic year are:
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £11,000 per year

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2017, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

48 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

  • A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at PPP or BTEC Diploma at MP or equivalent.
  • GCSE mathematics and English at grade C or above. 
  • We will consider mature students who have not recently undertaken a formal course of study at A-level or equivalent but can demonstrate relevant work or voluntary experience, indicating their ability to complete the course successfully.
  • Overseas applicants in an equivalent situation to UK students as outlined above and who have been taught in English or have IELTS 5.5 or equivalent will be considered.

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS 5.5 overall with a minimum of 5.0 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT 71 with a minimum of 19 in in each individual component- TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.
