Architecture and interior design at Solent

Architectural technologists, building designers and interior designers use a mix of creative and specialised technical skills to produce construction projects and internal spaces, from housing to large-scale buildings.

Studying at university enables you to blend your passion for design with technology, considering the relationship between aesthetics and architecture to create amazing spaces.

Architectural design and technology follows three branches of the fascinating architectural technology industry: design, technology and professional practice. This is complemented by modules in sustainable environmental design and building information modelling (BIM). Accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists means that the curriculum meets the specific needs of the architectural technology industry.

If you have a passion for interiors and the spaces we live in, the interior design programme could be for you. Students use their design, research and problem-solving skills to create amazing indoor spaces. Accredited by the Society of British and International Interior Design (SBID), students benefit from three years’ free membership of both professional bodies.

Our courses are also supported by a group of employer partners who are actively involved in mentoring, helping students with professional practice.

Our architectural design, interiors and construction courses have a long history of producing award-winning graduates, with many exciting career prospects available after graduation. There is a range of careers in the built environment – architectural technologist, interior designer, project manager, quantity surveyor and architectural designer.

Facilities

Students study within the architecture and interior design studio. This modern studio space has been developed to give students access to an environment which mirrors the feel and atmosphere of a working professional studio. This encourages students from various different built environment courses to come together and collaborate on multidisciplinary projects, just as they would in the workplace.

Facilities available to students include AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Photoshop, Google SketchUp Pro, 3D printers and large format scanners. By using industry-standard hardware and software, Solent students can develop the specific skills required by the architectural technology industry – such as sketching and computer-aided drawing – as well as transferable skills they can apply in other industries.
