At Solent you will expand your familiarity with literature, and expand your mind, becoming a more innovative and globally-conscious writer with a huge range of classic and cutting-edge writing techniques at your command.
You will study how various forms of creative and professional writing are planned, developed and creatively executed, as well as how creative writing theory can be married to creative writing practice.
Core areas of study include literary theory, poetry, writing, play texts and publishing – while a range of exciting optional modules will offer the chance to delve deeper into specific subjects and specialisms, focusing on the areas of writing that are of the most interest to you.
The course has a strong focus on employability and helping you kickstart a great career. You can develop transferable skills in research, analytical thinking, communication and teamwork – essential for any professional career – as well as working on live briefs from real-world clients. And you’ll even have the chance to become a published author, building up a portfolio of work that demonstrates your style and skills to prospective publishers or employers.

What does this course lead to?
You’ll develop the skills required to work in a number of communication and media-based industries, including writing, publishing, media production, teaching, journalism, programme research, sales, copywriting, and information management.

Teaching staff for the BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing degree have experience in writing-based careers and/or are actively engaged with current research within the creative industries.
The University cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

Core modules
Key Moments in the History of the Novel
From cuneiform to hieroglyphs, from Chinese wood block printing to the printing press, from medieval patrons to self-publishing, this module will take you on a whirlwind tour of some of the key moments in the history of the novel.
Puritans to Potter: Young Adult Fiction and Children’s Literature
During this module we’ll look at some of the key debates in historical and contemporary contexts including whether fiction written for children and young adults must be based on realism.
Writing with Power: Professional Practice in English
This module will help you to understand, for example, the difference between a copy-editor and a copywriter, between a content writer and a copy-editor and between a copy-editor and proofreader, to name only a few.
Making and Reading Poetry
This practical, hands-on module will introduce you to the skills needed to really understand basic poetic forms and stock your poetry toolbox. You will begin to understand poetry as writers, as listeners, and as performers.
Writing Sensation and Scandal
In this module you will learn how to successfully hone your craft with an understanding of story, plot and character as well as the structure and mechanics of how to build tension in writing and manipulate a reader’s experience of your work.
Writing and Selling the Short Story
In this module, there will be focus on various new markets for the short story. You will also become a published author by producing work for an English programme anthology.

Why choose the industry?
The value of the creative industries to the UK is up from £94.8 billion in 2016 to £101.5 billion, and has grown at nearly twice the rate of the economy since 2010, according to the Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS, 2018).
Solent’s English and creative writing degree helps students to develop the practical skills required for a range of roles. Suitable roles include media production, publishing, journalism, creative writing, copywriting, freelance writing, public relations, research or information management.
Tuition fees
The tuition fees for the 2022/23 academic year are:
- UK, EU (settled status) and Channel Island full-time fees: £9,250 per year
- International full-time fees: £14,250 per year

Solent University offers a range of bursaries and scholarships that provide financial assistance or waive fees for tuition or accommodation. Each bursary or scholarship has specific eligibility criteria. Check out our bursaries and scholarships pages to find out more.
Graduation costs
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

104-120 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent
- A minimum of two completed A-levels, a BTEC Extended Diploma at DMM or BTEC Diploma at D*D, T-level Merit or equivalent qualification, or a combination of qualifications which comply with the minimum entry requirement of 104 UCAS points.
- Direct entry into the second or third years may be considered for this course.
- Applicants over the age of 21 may be considered based on relevant experience, without having the required tariff points.

All international applicants need to be aware that the English language requirements to attend Solent University, and the English language requirements to obtain a visa from the Home Office, may be different. This means that if you meet the Solent University language requirement to gain a place on the course, you may still have to meet additional requirements to be granted with a visa by the Home Office.

How to apply
Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.
Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.
Your application should reach UCAS by 26 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

Top-up route:
We welcome applications from students currently studying a Foundation Degree, DipHE, HNC, HND or modules of an undergraduate degree course at another university, who wish to enter directly into Years 2 or 3 of one of our undergraduate degree courses. Language requirements
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:
- IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
- TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 20 in each individual component
- Duolingo English Language Test - 110 overall with minimum of 90 in each component
or equivalent.
Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.
Pre-Sessional English programme
The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.
