Southampton Solent’s international hospitality management top-up degree is designed for students who have completed a foundation degree, HND or equivalent international qualification in hospitality, tourism or management. Completion of this course will allow you to top-up your existing qualifications to a career enhancing BSc (Hons) International Hospitality Management degree.

The course combines practical, industry-focused content with management training. You’ll study global trends and analyse management strategies, whilst learning techniques to help develop your research and critical thinking. You’ll also hone your communication and pitching skills, to develop a broad knowledge to enable you to develop a career in this dynamic sector. 

There is often a good mix of international students on this course, providing you with the perfect opportunity to enhance your intercultural awareness and develop your interpersonal skills, sharing experiences from around the world.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2017/2018 academic year are: 
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year

Whilst these inflationary fee increases in tuition fees and student support loans have been announced by the Minister, they are still subject to formal parliamentary approval.

The international tuition fees for the 2017/18 academic year are:
International full-time fees: £11,000 per year

Key entry requirements icon

Key entry requirements

Relevant HND/foundation degree pass with Merit Overall (55 per cent) or 240 CATS points from a relevant three-year degree.

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Please contact us for further details.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The university cannot guarantee any particular members of staff will teach specific aspects of the course in the future, but will endeavour to ensure the teaching team maintains their balance of experience and qualifications.

Facilities

Students will have access to HOTS software for developing skills with online booking systems in Hospitality Management.

The team are dedicated to making the course as interactive as possible and to this end Southampton Solent University's own VLE, Solent Online Learning, is used extensively to make materials, course information, assessment details and tutor availability accessible at all times to all students. Solent Online Learning is also used to upload and grade written assessments. We are also extending the use of lecture capture to allow students to access lectures and review materials.

The team feel that Solent Online Learning is integral to the student experience and compliments class based learning to allow students access to all they need to successfully complete their studies.

Students are encouraged to develop their own academic research, learning key critical thinking and analytical skills. Students are given time to study a foreign language under the guidance of qualified native speakers.

The course team has built close relationships with cruise companies such as Carnival UK, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Saga Cruises (RSSC), Norwegian Cruise Line, AB Ports, Intercruises and other organisations such as University of Dubrovnik and Port of Dubrovnik and Cruise Line International Association (UK and Ireland). These connections have enabled past students to benefit from networking opportunities and guest lectures, bringing real-world experience into the classroom. 

The course is taught by experienced practitioners who will help to encourage you to use both academic knowledge and practical skills to enhance your employability potential. You will also be encouraged to develop a personal online branding portfolio to showcase your skills and talents to potential employers, as well as attend employability fairs to network directly. 

Our experienced team have a wealth of industry experience in all aspects of travel, tourism, hospitality, cruise and event management. As a result, the team has built up a range of dynamic relationships across the sector. For example, each year students can volunteer at the International Cruise Convention, dealing with up to 700 delegates and gaining valuable experience.  Students have taken part in ships visits including Cunard ships, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line. Our graduates have gone on to work at prestigious venues and continue to support Southampton Solent University with facilitating interesting field trip visits to local tourist destinations that include Portsmouth Historic Docks and the Mary Rose Museum.
