Course overview
The maritime business sector is vast and multidisciplinary – with around 90% of global trade transported by sea, and a complex network of national and international regulations and laws. This specialist top-up degree delivers in-depth understanding of the legal framework which underpins maritime business, addressing complexities of safe delivery, ownership, insurance and more.
On graduating you will have a thorough and current education in maritime business and law, with the knowledge to make an immediate contribution to industry organisations.
And you will have the ability to apply that knowledge to real-world challenges, thanks to exercises incorporating real problems derived from the industry, which explore the practical and practicable applications of theory and technical concepts.

Dissertation
A dissertation gives you the opportunity to undertake an extensive piece of research within your subject area and develop important skills to critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate your chosen topic.
Strategic Management
This module considers the issues of strategic management within the complex environment that enterprises operate, where opportunities and constraints are continually developing and changing. It explores a range of strategic management processes that address the complexity and variability of this environment.
Marine Insurance
This module explains the principles which divide the risk between Hull and P & I insurance, and covers the basic range of circumstances in which risks to parties and ships involved in international trade can be covered and the circumstances in which an indemnity for losses suffered can be recovered.
Financial Management
Investment appraisal, sources of funds, and risk management strategies are all examined in detail within a maritime context. Consideration will be given to new buildings, second hand purchases; the acquisition of other capital assets will also be addressed.
Maritime Law
This module will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of maritime law and practice, which is essential to the understanding of shipping as an international activity. It examines the legal issues which are fundamental to ship operation.

Tuition fees
The tuition fees for the 2023/24 academic year are:
- UK, EU (settled status) and Channel Island full-time fees: £9,250 per year
- International full-time fees: £15,000 per year

Graduation costs
There is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £45 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost. Extra guest tickets will go on sale after results publication and will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis. The cost per ticket is currently £15. Please note, we do not guarantee there will be any extra tickets available to purchase.

Full-time
Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.
Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.
Your application should reach UCAS by 25 January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until the end of June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

Contextual offers
Solent endeavours to offer learning opportunities to students from all backgrounds. When we receive and review an application, we take into consideration the context and personal circumstances of applicants when making a decision, which means our advertised entry tariff could be reduced.
Language requirements
Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:
- IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
- TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 20 in each individual component
- Duolingo English Language Test - 115 overall with minimum of 95 in each component or equivalent.
Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.
Pre-Sessional English programme
The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.
