About the course

Southampton Solent’s BA (Hons) Marketing programme will help prepare you for a varied career as a professional marketer – driving growth, increasing brand awareness and delivering high-quality marketing materials for businesses of all types and sizes.

You’ll be supported in developing a comprehensive understanding of marketing theory combined with practical application. You’ll study the key concepts of consumer behaviour and insight, marketing strategy, effective marketing planning and decision making, marketing communications, and creative digital technologies, focused on engaging global audiences.

The degree also helps you develop into a flexible marketer. Integration of personal, professional and transferable skills throughout the course help support your progression and development as an individual, within a team and as a learner – attributes that will enable you to be adaptable in today’s fast-moving job market.

Employability is embedded in the curriculum. You’ll have the opportunity to engage with employers and work on live client briefs and real-world projects at all levels. Extensive links with the business community, marketing groups and industry associations are continuously being established to ensure the degree is relevant to the modern marketing environment and current industry best practice. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend guest lectures and will be encouraged to take part in networking opportunities, vital for a successful future career in the marketing profession.

In addition to a traditional degree, the marketing programme also offers you access to a high level of professional qualifications. Additional qualifications include the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM), PRINCE2 project management and Google Analytics.

BA (Hons) Marketing is also available as an intensive weekend course. Students will attend all day classes each Saturday and graduate after three years of study.

What does this course lead to?

Few careers can offer a combination of so many different disciplines as marketing – from psychology to art to statistics, all packaged together into one role.

A marketing career is a rewarding and smart choice as there is currently strong demand across the country for marketers. Your biggest challenge is deciding which area to go into as the choice is so wide.

Recent graduates have taken up marketing roles in large-scale organisations such as Axis Europe and B&Q, as well as small businesses like MRS Web Solutions.

Solent’s BA (Hons) Marketing programme is open to students from a range of academic backgrounds. Candidates should aspire to a career in marketing, advertising, PR, events, research and marketing analytics.

Students who complete a relevant foundation year at Solent benefit from direct entry onto this course.

Fees and costs

Tuition fees

The 2018/19 fees are not yet available. For guidance, the 2017/18 fees were:

UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year
International full-time fees: £11,000 per year 
UK and EU placement year fees: £1,385
International placement year fees: £1,545

Whilst these inflationary fee increases in tuition fees and student support loans have been announced by the Minister, they are still subject to formal parliamentary approval.

Other costs

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Please contact us for further details.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

How to apply

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

We gave the students a creative task for their real-life consultancy project; to develop a service aimed at generating a new market for our physiotherapy provision. Industry specialists mentor and assess your work. Guest speakers are common and the course has its own marketing networking events where you’ll engage with employers and industry figures.

Students often attend industry events as part of their professional accreditations and have presented at both internal and external conferences, with academic staff and on their own.

Placements

During the course you’ll have the option to carry out a work placement year, offering you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience before going on to your final year of study.

You’ll also be encouraged to find work experience through the core Personal and Professional Development units, aided by the course team’s professional contacts.
