Southampton Solent’s industry-focused top-up degree will help students enhance business skills and knowledge, and develop a solid understanding of the workings and opportunities of the contemporary music industries. Through a combination of practical experience, theory and contextualisation, students build essential skills in music management, such as music business strategy and entrepreneurship, music law, copyright and finance, the mechanics of the music industries and the importance of digital music markets, helping them to enhance career potential within the industry including management companies, artist management, record companies, music publishing, media firms and live music agencies. 

Learning is supported by a varied programme of guest speakers, who have previously included: Oasis Manager, Marcus Russell; Vice President of Live Nation UK, Andy Copping; Radio 1 and Bestival’s Rob da Bank; owner of the 25 Hour Convenience Store record label, Wayne Clarke; Franz Ferdinand and Vaccines manager, Cerne Canning; Mute Records’ head of press, Zoe Miller; tour manager, Tre Stead; Radio 1 DJ, Danny Howard; drum and bass pioneer DJ, Fabio; Joel De’Ath (Sony Music), Sarah Robertson (Bristol Colston Hall), and Mark Lawrence, CEO of The Association for Electronic Music.

Solent is proactive in bringing music to a wider audience.  In previous years, students studying our range of music courses have been involved in planning, organising and promoting various music related events from gigs and club nights to the University’s own annual SMILEfest event.  This has been through Solent Music, our in-house organisation which manages work experience opportunities and promotes music students’ practice-based work. In addition, you can work with our other in-house creative agencies which provide further opportunities to work with businesses on real-life projects and live briefs aimed at gaining valuable work experience and building a professional network.

What does this course lead to?

Southampton Solent’s Music Management top-up degree prepares students for a wide range of roles within the music, media and creative industries. Graduates could progress from this course into careers such as artist management, recording and publishing, events management, public relations or tour management.

Who is this course for?

This top-up degree is ideal for those who have previously studied a related subject to HND level or equivalent and who wish to pursue a career in the music industry. The one-year course allows students to convert this existing qualification to a full honours degree.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2017/2018 academic year are:
UK and EU full-time fees: £9,250 per year

Whilst these inflationary fee increases in tuition fees and student support loans have been announced by the Minister, they are still subject to parliamentary approval.

The international tuition fees for the 2017/18 academic year are:
International full-time fees: £11,000 per year 

Bursaries and scholarships

Graduation costs

Graduation is the ceremony to celebrate the achievements of your studies. For graduates in 2017, there is no charge to attend graduation, but you will be required to pay for the rental of your academic gown (approximately £42 per graduate, depending on your award). You may also wish to purchase official photography packages, which range in price from £15 to £200+. Graduation is not compulsory, so if you prefer to have your award sent to you, there is no cost.

  • Relevant HND/foundation degree pass with merit overall (55 per cent average), or 240 CATS points from a relevant three-year degree, or an equivalent overseas qualification, together with a proven ability in spoken and written English (IELTS score of 6 or above).

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

The University provides excellent learning resources and facilities for its students, from campus-wide wireless to extensive library services and dedicated student working spaces with plenty of laptop points. The course uses industry-standard Adobe Systems applications, and access is provided to a wide range of other programs and equipment needed to complete coursework.

Through the University’s in-house Solent Music initiative, students may also have the opportunity to work on artist management and development, record company style projects, live events, club nights and more.  Solent Music has managed over 1,500 work experience opportunities and has worked with a range of local and national music businesses, as well as managing guest speaker and academic conferences where students may have the opportunity to network with industry personnel.

Placements

Students are encouraged to find work experience during their time at University, and to get involved with the University’s in-house creative agencies, Solent Music, Solent Productions or Solent Creatives.
