About the course

Want to help injured athletes recover from injury? This challenging sport and exercise therapy degree will help provide you with the essential clinical skills and judgement you need to secure an exciting career working with athletes, sports teams and more.

This highly practical course is specifically tailored to help students secure a rich and interesting career in this area. Students have plenty of chances to develop essential clinical skills in diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating injured participants, as well as the opportunity to acquire industry-specific fitness (REPs) and coaching (NGB) qualifications. 

Students also learn a combination of injury prevention, recognition and evaluation, management treatment and referral, rehabilitation and education, with a specific focus on applications within a sport and exercise setting. The varied nature of this course has the potential to open a wide range of career opportunities upon graduation. 

The course is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists, this means students can become an accredited member of the society on graduating – demonstrating standards of knowledge and competence that are professionally recognised and recommended.

What does this course lead to?

Sports and exercise therapists play an integral part in the sporting industry. Their role is to help prevent injuries, treat them through immediate care if they should occur, and plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes.

As popularity and participation in sport grows, there is increasing demand for talented graduates with the specialist knowledge they need to help athletes recover faster, more effectively and without long-term side-effects. Sport centres, gyms, professional athletes and sports teams in everything from swimming to Premiership football regularly employ their own in-house sport and exercise therapists, and the industry is expanding steadily.

112 UCAS tariff points from A-levels or equivalent

We welcome applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds. Applicants who are not in possession of the minimum entry requirements but are able to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm and motivation will be considered on an individual basis and may be admitted subject to satisfactory interview and/or portfolio. Please contact us for further details.

English language requirements

Applicants who do not have English as their first language will be required to demonstrate an approved level of proficiency in the use of the English language. The agreed minimum requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS minimum 6.0 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each individual component
  • TOEFL IBT minimum 80 with a minimum of 19 in each individual component-TOEFL is only valid for EU students
  • or equivalent.

Qualifications are checked before enrolment, and international students must bring their original certificates or certified copies when coming to study at the University.

The University also offers a pre-sessional English programme for international students who wish to improve their level of English before starting a degree course.

Any student applying for the first year of a full-time/sandwich undergraduate course must apply through UCAS (University and Colleges Admissions Service). This includes mature, overseas and EU students.

Nearly all schools and colleges offer their students the facility of applying electronically through the UCAS website using 'Apply'; it may also be used by those applying independently in the UK and overseas. This facility and all course information can be found on the UCAS website: www.ucas.com.

Your application should reach UCAS by January if you hope to enter a course the following autumn. Early application is advised for the most popular subject areas. Late applications may be made until June. The UCAS Code for the University is S30, code name SOLNT.

Facilities

Students have access to Southampton Solent University’s outstanding sport and exercise facilities, including fully equipped modern physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and health and exercise labs. These facilities allow students to practise and hone their skills in a real-life setting. Students also have the opportunity to practise their skills in our student-led therapy clinic, working with real-life patients. Students will also have access to our Test Park football centre, featuring a floodlit football stadium, a full size, all-weather 3G sports pitch and more.

Placements

To gain accreditation by the Society of Sport Therapists, you will need to carry out a minimum of 200 hours of clinical practice throughout the degree. These hours may include pitch-side sports therapy practice, a student-led sport and exercise massage clinic, and external placements with local sports clubs or organisations; your course team have excellent connections in the local and national industry, and will be able to help you find external placements during your studies.
