The Fashion as Community Week forum will explore the themes of the week, showing in theory and practice how fashion can participate within helping communities to engage with the themes of sustainability, social change and well-being. A series of talks will demonstrate past, current and future projects that involve each of these themes and consider how fashion and design can use its tools to enable, inspire and bring communities together.
The first two presentations will explore current final major project proposals from students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion and Communication, Gretel Veersalu, Darby Stewart and Hannah Castleton.
Gretel will explore conscious consumption. Darby and Hannah will discuss "generation girl".
The final three presentations will be delivered from staff within the Southampton Solent fashion department. They will share research projects that have been conducted outside of teaching to demonstrate the valuable contribution of considering how fashion's tools can be utilised for social good, well-being and sustainability:
Anna Felton (Lecturer Media and Fashion Styling) will discuss "How creative hands empower social change".
Christine Hammond (Senior Fashion Lecturer for Fashion Management and Promotion) will talk about "What can trees do for you? How we can boost our psychological well being by designing with nature in mind".
Rachael Taylor (Fashion Lecturer for Design and Communication) will share her thoughts on "Designing the ripple effect: creating sustainable cultures and alternative fashion economies".
