We are supporting Hands-on Humanities Day, a one-day event where visitors can explore the humanities with fun hands-on activities, workshops, talks and installations.
This is the first time the event has taken place in the city centre - in the Sir James Matthews Buildling, John Hansard Gallery and NST City - and Solent has partnered with the University of Southampton to offer a series of activities led by our staff and students. All the Solent-led activities will take place in the Sir James Matthews Building - highlights include:
Solent Productions show reel
Time: Film screening on the hour
Location: Solent lecture theatre
Students develop media expertise and creativity by making video productions for real world clients as part of their courses. On the BA (Hons) Television course, these live briefs are assessed and encourage students to work professionally to produce short impactful films often raising awareness of social and environmental questions. This short 25-minute compilation showcases student work exploring mental health, identity, tolerance and community. Take a seat and enjoy the show.
The Race is On
Time: Film screening on the hour (11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm
Location: Itchen Lecture Theatre
The risks of impending climate breakdown are inspiring millions of people across the world to demand action. The UK has set a goal to become carbon neutral by 2050. While ambitious and challenging, it is not enough. Produced and directed by Dr James Dyke and Paul Maple, The Race is On explores the economic forces that are driving us towards disaster, and the central role of untested technologies that governments are relying on to avert disaster.
Build a paper tower
Time: 12.30pm - 4.30pm
Location: Avon Room
Paper, as used in Origami, is a versatile and fragile material, but it can also be a strong building unit if used creatively. Join Dr Atsuhide Ito (Course Leader, Fine Art at Solent University) in creating a paper tower by only using materials that you may find in your household. Using only paper, masking tape and string, join us for the challenge of building the paper tower as tall as it can reach!
People and places photo exhibit
Time: 10.30am - 4.30pm
Location: Meon Room
From large rural landscapes to small urban metropolises, who we are is often shaped by the people and places we meet. Take a look at our BA (Hons) Photography students' work about people and place.
Time: 10.30am - 4.30pm
Looking to get away from the hustle and bustle? Take a few minutes for peace and reflection in our quiet zone. Please ensure you leave the room in a tidy and clean way for other users.
