Student blogger Michael talks about the importance of mental health at university and support that is available for students.

27th February 2020

When coming to university, every student is in the same boat; you’re in a new city with new people, and for many, you’re living by yourself for the first time. Although it can feel that everyone is having a good time, for many it can be very difficult to cope because of mental health or other related issues. At and around Solent University there are facilities and services dedicated to easing you through those initial months, as well as being there for support through the entirety of your time at university.

The best place to start when looking for support, as well as any other student related issues, is student support services. At Solent, we have the Student Hub with dedicated and helpful members of staff who listen and help support you in the best direction for you, whether it be towards advice on well being, counselling services or student aid.

If you are ever in a severe state of mental health and cannot make it into university, Southampton is also home to the Samaritans with people who will listen and help you through what you are experiencing. Call them for free on 116 123 or visit them at 11 College Place, SO15 2FE - they will do everything in their power to help ease you back to a better state of mind.

Among these services is an entire university of staff and members who want nothing more than for you to have your best possible experience at university. Please do not hesitate to talk to your lecturers, staff, or the necessary individuals if you are struggling and they will help in any way they can. Solent is a place where mental wellbeing is a priority.

Wellbeing through self-care is important, so you can help to look after yourself through kindness - everyone has different needs, so find what works best for you as individual.

Thursday 5 March 2020 is University Mental Health Day, so it is recognised that this is an important matter. There is a movement of people sharing their experiences, fighting stigma and promoting support to change the future of student mental health.
