Congratulations to Beth Davies for reaching the final five in the Eventice

Congratulations to student Bethany Davies, who got through to the semi-finals of the national event management graduate competition The Eventice last month.

Final-year events management students are invited to compete in the annual Apprentice-style competition, which offers a job in the industry to the winner.

Bethany, who was one of the top five competitors, submitted a video about why she deserved to win, before completing a series of tasks over three days. At the end, she had to present a topic to a panel of industry experts, who chose who should get the job there and then.

Beth said: “It was very intense because we were up at 6am and home between 8pm and 10pm for three days, but I learnt a whole array of skills: presentation and pitching, interview techniques, working long hours, networking and negotiation. I definitely learnt a lot from it, not only from an industry point of view but about myself, what I want from my career and what I have to offer an employer.”

The competition was started in 2011 and is run by recruitment company ESP in association with Mash Media and Bluehat.

Since its inception, students at Southampton Solent University have been assisted by Matt Bunday, who previously worked in the events management team at the University before starting his own company.

Having acted as Beth’s mentor throughout the process, he said: “Solent should be, and I certainly was, very proud of the effort Beth put into this amazing yet tiring three day competition. She showed a high ability to multi-task (thinking about all the other demands on a final year student at the moment), and the commitment to see things through. I have no doubt Beth will do very well for herself when she graduates.”
