Students on the BA (Hons) Business Management and BA (Hons) Enterprise with Entrepreneurship courses were treated to a guest lecture as part of their induction week in September.

Local entrepreneur, Spencer Bowman, founder of coffee shop chain Mettricks, and a Solent alumnus, gave a talk about his experiences in business. Spencer shared some insight into setting up and running a successful business and talked to the students about what and where they could be in the future by studying a business-related degree.

To get the students motivated and give them a taste of what to expect during their course, they were given a live brief to work on. As vice-chair of Go!Southampton, a proposed business improvement district, Spencer asked the students to undertake a research project to identify how Southampton could better support and service the city's student population. The results from the research could potentially then be used to inform Go!Southampton's strategies moving forward.

By working on the live brief, students had the opportunity to see how these directly impact their learning and developed skills from the outset. The results and presentations were well-received by Spencer, who found them very useful and potentially either validated some of Go!Southampton's strategies, or could be future projects.

As well as it being a great opportunity for the students to network directly with an employer, the students found Spencer to be an inspiring role model.
